Designing An ANPR System

If you are planning to install an anpr system there are few things to consider before purchase. Specifying the right equipment from the start will ensure your system delivers the recognition accuracy you expect.

The most important component is the anpr camera. Choosing the right camera and locating it well are the keys to success; get this right and everything else falls into place.

If you intend providing some components yourself, then we would strongly recommend giving us a call so that any compatibility issues are resolved at the outset.

key stages in designing an anpr system
camera location

 - try and choose locations where vehicles are constrained by a narrow road width
 - always view vehicles from the front
 - try and view vehicles from as close to the head-on position as possible
 - don’t mount the camera too high (avoid tilting the camera down more than 30°)
 - try and avoid locations where vehicles tailgate unless you also plan a speed hump

camera choice

 - choose a colour anpr camera only if you have good site lighting or plan to improve it
 - if lighting is poor choose a monochrome or dual anpr camera which have built-in IR lighting
 - monochrome cameras are ideal if you do not need vehicle images
 - dual cameras offer colour vehicle images only when lighting is good
 - tungsten IR is good for long distances but plan for regular bulb replacement
 - measure the camera to vehicle distance and choose the corresponding anpr camera to match

supplying your own camera

 - ensure any colour camera is sensitive enough for the location (even with a fast shutter speed set)
 - do not use a standard mono camera with IR lighting at night as special filtering is required
 - set a fast shutter, typically 1/500th second
 - focus on the capture point and check this under darkness
 - zoom in close so that a car's wing mirrors almost touch the edges of the display screen
 - mount the camera level

how many anpr processors?

 - if you need only a single anpr camera consider our Kits which are tested and ready to go
 - traffic speed determines how many computers are required - check here for info
 - remember that overview cameras which record movies use one of the anpr camera inputs

stand-alone or networked?

 - stand-alone systems may have upto 4 anpr cameras with collated reporting
 - several stand-alone systems may be deployed on one site, each with separate reporting
 - choose networking when system-wide collated reporting and record searching are required
 - networking is needed when all capture pc’s must check against a single database
 - networked systems need an extra server pc with our Network product installed

optional equipment

 - all our anpr systems can control a barrier or drive an outdoor message display
 - additional overview cameras provide side or rear window views of the vehicle
 - a UPS costs very little but greatly improves system reliability
 - a printer will allow hard copies of reports and all record types to be produced
 - professionally drawn camera location maps will greatly assist your operator
